Skillet Rosemary Chicken

Total Time: 40 min
Prep: 15 min
Cook: 25 min
Yield: 4 servings

  • 3/4 pound small red-skinned potatoes, halved, or quartered if large

  • Kosher salt

  • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary, plus 1 tablespoon leaves

  • 1 clove garlic, smashed

  • Pinch of red pepper flakes

  • Juice of 2 lemons (squeezed halves reserved)

  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

  • 4 skin-on, bone-in chicken breasts (6 to 8 ounces each)

  • 10 ounces cremini mushrooms, halved

Preheat the oven to 450. Cover the potatoes with cold water in a saucepan and salt the water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and cook until tender, about 8 minutes; drain and set aside.

Pile the rosemary leaves, garlic, 2 teaspoons salt and the red pepper flakes on a cutting board, then mince and mash into a paste using a large knife. Transfer the paste to a bowl. Stir in the juice of 1 lemon and the olive oil. Add the chicken and turn to coat.

Heat a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken, skin-side down, cover and cook until the skin browns, about 5 minutes. Turn the chicken; add the mushrooms and potatoes to the skillet and drizzle with the juice of the remaining lemon.

Add the rosemary sprigs and the squeezed lemon halves to the skillet; transfer to the oven and roast, uncovered, until the chicken is cooked through and the skin is crisp, 20 to 25 minutes.

A New Makeover

So I don't think I have gotten to share this project with you yet! It is a real privilege when dear friends ask us to do a make over for their home. How did their environment change? Well, it's big! So this was just Phase I which included the entry, stairs, upstairs catwalk, hallway and family room. We first began by scraping all the ceilings, removing the existing popcorn texture. Next, came repairing any areas, then a splatter drag texture was applied to the ceiling. Afterwards primer and paint for the new ceiling and walls. The wall color was specifically chosen to showcase the focal point of the entire area, the floor to ceiling fireplace! Last but not least the banister, spindles and ceiling beams were painted a contrasting color to bring them to life. Peaceful and Welcoming! We love being part of your lives!

Kitchen Remodel

We got the opportunity to remodel a kitchen for some long time precious friends in their new home last week. So what did we do?

First, we installed new granite in the kitchen, add two new taller custom cabinets to create more storage and some visual interest to the existing cabinets, then a new sink and faucet. Next, came a creamy white base paint to update the brown cabinets. This also helped to bring the existing travertine tile backsplash, wall color and new granite all together.

After that both the master and guest bath cabinets got a little face lift with a new paint job in a deep rich gray.

Such a sweet peaceful time in their home. We love being part of your lives!

Check out the before and afters!

Kennedy Joy's Sunshine Spaces Room Makeover

Kennedy Joy was our most recent room makeover for Sunshine Spaces. This sweet two year old is in love with all things “Frozen”. We, A Work of Art!, hand painted her walls for a translucent ice castle effect. The walls are set for this little princess with soft shades of ice blue, lavender and teal. Glitter and snowflakes adorn these walls, while hand painted icicles and snowflakes accent her bed and dresser. We used Design 7 Seven acrylic glaze to achieve the transparency needed for the special effects. We are privileged, honor and blessed to be a part of Kennedy’s life. If you would like to help touch the lives of these children and families, click the link to see how you too can be a part. http://www.sunshinespaces.org.

Master Retreat

What a fun project! This master bedroom makeover is about layering. We began with the color palette from a newly selected duvet cover and pillows. The accent wall and ceiling are custom mixed metallic plaster and an overall stencil design in golds, bronze and silvers. The step up tray metallic ceiling color was also custom created to flow effortlessly for a peaceful master retreat. The step up tray metallic ceiling color was also a custom created to flow effortlessly with the new color scheme. Last but not least the hardwood flooring was installed, the end result a beautiful and peaceful master retreat.

A Kitchen Grand On Style

Our kitchen was moderate in size but "Grand" on style. We have moved within the last month, however, I recently got a chance to speak with the new owners, they are loving their new home.

Our home sold in 48 hours with multiple offers. While maintaining our home constantly through the years, about two years before putting our home up for sale we remolded. I always wanted to enjoy the fruits for my labor before passing it forward.

In the kitchen we bumped up the cabinet above the stove to create interest, installed new stainless steel appliances and crown molding. Next "White Kashmir" granite counter tops, new backsplash, garbage disposal, stainless steel sink and faucet were installed.
The cabinets were painted a creamy white on the uppers and charcoal with a soft ebony glaze on the lower cabinetry. For the finishing touch we floated all the wall surfaces, then applied a custom color metallic plaster. The walls are understated and dreamy. The kind that makes you want to touch them! Love leaving good things for others to enjoy as we move forward on this journey!

The Next Chapter

I created this bathroom three years ago.  We touched every square inch of this room. Gray hadn’t become the new brown yet.  It was just peaking in the design market at that time. My goal was to bring in the things I love.  The design challenge was the granite.  It had grays and browns mixed with a slight pink undertone in the brown, which I didn’t like. So, I played down any color that would enhance the reddish tones. I also wanted to create a vintage retro look.  I always like to add a pop of something unexpected and fun.  My pop was the chandelier over the toilet.  Glass bricks were used for the tub and shower surround. The porcelain floor tiles were 12x24.  We hand trowled the walls, painted all of the walls, the ceiling, the trim, and the wainscoting. What I love most are the colors, the patterns, the texture and the layering.   Look for color. Look for contrast, layering and some fun! This palette is completely neutral.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I have! After 22 years we have recently sold our home and we will be moving on to create the next story of our life.

Bringing a New Glaze to Market Design 7 Seven by Artist Sandra Gonzalez Combines Affordability With Superior Open Time

A Big Thank You to Focus on Faux. Check out the February's online issue featuring an article on Design 7 Seven!

By positioning herself at the intersection of art and business, Sandra Gonzalez has built a successful and multi-faceted decorative arts career. As the owner of A Work of Art in Fort Worth, Texas, Sandra has been providing murals and decorative finishes to a wide array of commercial and residential clients for the past 15 years. As an expansion of her business endeavors, she has moved into the more complex field of product development. Within the last 18 months, she brought her first product on the market: a high-performance glaze that is versatile enough to meet the needs of decorative artisans and professional painters alike.

                                      Artist, Sandra Gonzalez

                                      Artist, Sandra Gonzalez

The glaze is called Design 7 Seven, a name that incorporates the use of Sandra’s favorite number not once but twice. And what makes this glaze so special? Certainly one of its defining properties is its extended open time, which enables artists to provide a seamless application on expansive walls without having to move at breakneck speed. Another major selling point is its price, which Sandra positioned in a way that allows decorative artisans to keep more money in their own pockets.

Design 7 Seven is an online business strictly devoted to one SKU—a 1-gallon can of acrylic glaze. “Some clients ask why we don’t sell our glaze in quarts, but getting those quarts is actually more expensive than doing gallons,” Sandra says. “It’s a cost of doing business type thing. My whole thought process was trying to share that savings with the professional faux finisher.”

A Fateful Reconnection

The seeds for the introduction of Design 7 Seven were sown during the eight years that Sandra spent working as an art teacher in a private school. One of her top students was the granddaughter of the man who invented one of the nation’s top joint compounds known as Murco Wall Mud. Years later, Sandra and her former student reconnected. By then, Sandra was well into her career as muralist and decorative artist while her former student was an executive in the family business. Over the years, the company Murco Wall Products (also based in Fort Worth) had grown to become a diverse manufacturing company whose products included not only joint compounds but paints, primers, tools and supplies.

Murco also did private manufacturing, which dovetailed nicely into Sandra’s desireto bring new products to the faux-finishing marketplace. Her initial focus, with Murco’s help, was to create a glaze with superior open time. Sandra recruited her son, Caleb, to help her with the development of the glaze. Caleb had an educational background in music business that Sandra felt could be helpful in this endeavor. “I knew he had the mind for it,” Sandra says, “so I asked if he would consider helping me with this.”

Extensive Product Development

The next two years were devoted to product testing and refinements. Sandra gives Caleb credit for his relentless focus on heightening the quality of the product. “He would challenge me to push it beyond our comfort level and beyond what we knew the product could do previously.” But even then the product was not finalized. Sandra decided she needed professional artists to give their assessment of the product, so she turned to several acquaintances from the Lone Star Artisan chapter of IDAL, including Darlene Hartley, owner of the Painted Wall, and Tim and Camet Runkle, who own Beautiful Brushworks. “I knew them,” says Sandra. “I knew I could trust them. I told them, ‘Please push this as far as you can and tell me what you think.’ ” The artists came back with positive feedback, in one case, noting, “I actually went to lunch and came back and was able to pick up from where I left off.” Sandra and her artisan friends also tried the glaze in the extreme Texas heat, and it worked out very well.

A Positive Reception

Sandra officially launched Design 7 Seven at the IDAL Show in Fort Worth in Fall 2014. The feedback she has received in the ensuing year and a half has been extremely positive. “We’ve had people calling us from all over—New York, Florida, California—and they’re loving it,” Sandra says. Success with the product isn’t happening overnight, but Sandra is pleased how the product is catching on. “We’re a start-up, and start-ups can take quite a bit of time to get the word out, but we’re starting to get people calling us and saying, ‘This distributor told us about you.’ We’re very thankful that other companies are starting to see the value in us and sending clients our way.”

Daystar Television Studios

WOW!  The Daystar Television Network Studios was my fourth project for the awesome people and facility of Daystar.  The Daystar Studios are comprised of several individual sets that are interconnected with one large open expanse.  Just about everywhere you look throughout the studios, you will see the craftsmanship of "A Work of Art!"

The Daystar project was a massive undertaking.  It took a multitude of talented professionals from various companies to construct an amazing set.  Our team consisted of a network of eighteen local christian artists and faux finishers, each very gifted in their field of art.

Here is where we worked our magic!  We met with a company that specialized in Styrofoam and we selected the architectural elements for the sets.  Starting with raw, white foam we began the distressing process and then added specialized primer and plaster to create the look and feel of centuries-old, hand-chiseled stone.

daystar_1 - Copy.png

Next, began the layering and hand painting processes necessary to produce the custom finishes on the furniture and shelving.  Check out the faux wood graining on the expansive library cabinetry, which all began as MDF board!  People tell me all the time while looking at our wood graining work, that they would never know the difference if we had not of told them!

Daystar Library 003.JPG

Even the storage closet looks like woodwork with old, iron hinges and door pulls.  In reality, this is hand-painte Trompe l'oiel.  Notice the ares of open sky above the rooftops; it is actually a large mural painted on canvas and sheetrock.

One of my favorite elements in the project is the slate and glass mosaic archway that we created and then faux finished to appear aged.  This mosaic was a wonderful and unexpected opportunity to play with texture and create visual interest in an area that otherwise may have gone unnoticed.

The wall textures and finishes were selected for their aged characteristics in keeping with the old, European style of layering plasters on top of each other from generation to generation.  This process creates depth with different colors, textures and also shows cracking and crumbling which adds character.  This technique is demonstrated on various surfaces throughout the set.

The cobblestone, faux painted flooring was an opportunity to work with acrylics in a new dimension.  Using garden sprayers several different layers of acrylic stain were applied to the concrete surface.  After the layers had dried, the cobblestones were hand painted.  We crawled around on our hands and knees to paint highlights, lowlights, and add the finishing touches.  Ouch!

Another major focus was the sixty five foot long by nineteen foot tall backdrop mural.  The massive, hand painted canvas is visible from just about every angle of the studio.  The mural design began from my basic, thumbnail sketch on a sheet of paper and grew exponentially.  We began with two very talented artists and started the layering process by airbrushing the foundation of sky and terrain.  After that, the hand painting began with many layers of detailing, starting with large brushes and working our way down to very small.  In total, eight professional artists worked together to create this stunning backdrop.

The Coventry Project

One of the many specialties of "A Work of Art!" is the ability to take a project from inception to completion.  That is just what The Coventry Project entailed.  What was once a blue, twenty year old, Victorian style landmark on a country road, had become an over-grown eyesore on a busy thoroughfare.

newly renovated and painted, landscaping in progress

newly renovated and painted, landscaping in progress

We completely renovated the house and the detached garage.  We also turned the garage into additional office and storage spaces and added new landscaping and fencing.  Whew! The final results were amazing!  The building retained its original character, only now it was new and improved inside and out.

Why am I sharing the details of the Coventry Project with you?  Because we realized that it took a team of building professionals to complete a project of this size and complexity.  We work with The Metroplex's top builders, designers and more.  We network with our team of building professionals to assist you in making your project amazing, just like The Coventry Project!

Welcome to the new "A Work of Art!" website at art-wrk.com

Hello and welcome to the brand new site of "A Work of Art!" faux finishing.  We are so excited to share with each of you our passion for art and how we transform blank, white surfaces into masterpieces.  Art for us is not just a way of life, but a gift from God to impact our world and your environment with "living art."

What is "living art"?  It is art that touches your life daily.  It is a mural in your child's bedroom or the faux finish in your dining room.  It is a custom canvas painting that you never grow tired of and still takes your breath away every time you walk past it.

"A Work of Art!" is a full service commercial and residential faux finishing, painting, decorative arts and remodeling company located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.  We specialize in faux finishes, custom murals, fine art, painting and renovations.  Our mission is to achieve excellence by continually educating ourselves in the industry's latest products, specialty finishes and art mediums, while upholding time-honored craftsmanship and attention to detail.  We are committed to offering you superior customer service and competitive prices.

Over the years, many of our friends and clients have asked how we began and where we get our inspiration.  Well, we began with an entrepreneurial spirit combined with an insatiable desire to create art.  With a background in art and business, we knew that we possessed the talent, creativity, business intelligence and work ethic to succeed. So, in April 2001, we began serving the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.  Today we have the pleasure of working in the most breathtakingly beautiful homes throughout the nation.  As for our inspiration, that comes from everyday life.  Wherever we go, we are constantly looking for new things to inspire us -- the sounds and sights of a city, the surrounding countryside, a piece of fabric, an old postcard or a scrap piece of paper can all become the launching points for our creations.  Oh, and lets not forget you, the client!  I am constantly  amazed at your creativity, which we have the privilege of translating into custom works of art.

We are thrilled to say "Thank you" for your continued support in sharing our passion with your family and friends and for giving us the opportunity to help make your home or business "A Work of Art!"
